Save time taking notes or transcribing with Otter
This week’s app is really helpful for helping you save time taking meeting notes, or transcribing audio and video.
Best of all, it’s another freebie!
Welcome to this week’s App of the Week. This week’s app is a brand new favourite of mine. It’s helped me quickly create blog post with videos, take better meeting notes, and just basically helps me save loads of time with anything that involves typing or transcribing.
The app is called otter.ai and is basically a free online transcription service. You can use it to take either board meeting notes where you want a written transcription of the meeting or written notes or you can use it to upload a video or audio in it transcribes your video and audio for you.
How cool is that right? So without further ado, I’m going to jump across and I’m going to share my screen and show you how it works. I just wanted to put the prices up front because I know everybody’s not wanting another subscription service. But clearly there is a lot you can do with the basic plan for free.
So you can have record and playback, you can transcribe in real time, and even identifies the speakers in your transcription and check it out, you get 600 minutes a month of subscription. 600 minutes! So, as far as I’m concerned, the free plan of Otter offers you loads of value.
If you do happen to want to upgrade and want more than 600 minutes, it’s only $8 33 a month per user for the next plan up. And that gives you 6000 minutes! So this is a really affordable tool, guys.
Now I’m going to log in and show you around to my otter account. So here we are inside. This is what it looks like. You can see a couple of my previous videos that I’ve uploaded here to get transcribed. If you want to do a new audio, it’s really easy. You just push that record or you can import one that you’ve already done. I tend to only use this import function because generally speaking, I’m importing a video that I’ve already made, but if you want to record live, particularly if you need a record of a board meeting, or if you need a record of a meeting with a client, and you don’t want to have to take notes and rely on that, (or rely on your memory), then you just push record and it’ll start transcribing what you say.
You can group your recordings into folders. I’ve got a folder for blogs, one for client notes, one for my other business (we do vlogs each week), and one for my App of the Week. The transcript tells you the timestamp of the video.
Now, I have to say that this is not perfect, okay. It’s not going to give you a Word Perfect transcription, you will still need to proofread it – especially if you use industry jargon or have a thick accent. But, the great thing is that you can control the playback speed so if you’re transcribing you can change the speed to half time.
You can even skip the silence. So if there are periods of silence, you don’t need to sit there and listen to it, it’ll just automatically skip it for you.
Then all I do is I copy the transcription, edit the bits that I need to edit, and I pop it into a blog post.
You can see under each of my app of the week videos, I have got the transcription. That’s because not everybody will want to watch a video. Some of them will want to read the content. Not only that, but if you do this with your blog posts, it saves a lot of time. So for me, it’s much easier to do a video than it is to write a blog post (10 times less time), but you still get the benefit for your seat for your SEO, or search engine optimization of heaven. All of those keywords in there.
So there you go. That’s otter.ai.
If you don’t already subscribe, I highly recommend you check it out. It makes transcription so easy.
That’s me for another week. I’ll see you back next week for another of my App of the Week.
